ミニのことをミニクーパーと呼ぶ人も多い。特にミニをあまり知らない人の間でミニクーパーの名は知れ渡っている。けれども、そもそもクーパーの語源が人の名前であることを知らない人も多いみたいだ。ここでジョン・クーパーという男の波乱万丈な人生をお届けしよう。
クーパー、それは英国のレースシーンに刻まれた偉大なブランドであり、ホンダがF1GPに初めて進出する際には力を借りたコンストラクターであった。しかし、それはジョン・クーパーというエンジニアが一代で成し遂げたことではない。彼の功績には、そのベースとなる父親の存在があったのだ。
ジョン・ニュートン・クーパーは1923年7月17日にチャールズ・ニュートン・クーパーの息子として生まれた。父親のチャールズ・クーパーは温厚な人柄で、営んでいた地元の自動車修理工場は地域の人々に利用されていた。
やがて盛んになってきたモータースポーツのためにレーシングマシンの修理やメンテナンスまで任されるようになっていく。そこへ他で丁稚奉公を終えた息子のジョン・クーパーが加わり、オリジナルのレーシングマシンを製作するようになるのだ。
F1マシンがまだ空力デバイスをまとうことを知らない1950年代、寸胴のようなボディに溝付きタイヤ、1.5Lの自然吸気エンジンで戦っていた頃の話だ。それらはFR（フロントエンジン・リアドライブ）で、コーナリング限界の低いマシンとドライバーは格闘していた。
そんな中、ドライバーの後方にエンジンをマウントし、リアタイヤのトラクション性能を稼ぐと共に旋回モーメントを小さくすることで、コーナリング性能を飛躍的に高めたマシンが登場したのである。これがクーパー500と呼ばれた最初のフォーミュラマシンであった。
実はこれは偶然の産物であった。クーパーカー・カンパニーはオートバイのエンジンを搭載することで、軽量コンパクトなマシンを作り上げることを考えた。しかし変速機がチェーン駆動だったことからエンジンをフロントに搭載することができないため、仕方なくドライバーの後方にマウントしたのだが、これが偶然にもコーナリング限界を高めることにつながったのだ。
F1GPのマシンを作り替えた伝説のチーム、クーパーカー・カンパニー
クーパーカー・カンパニーが開発したこのマシンは、ワークスチームとして参戦しただけでなく、プライベーターにも販売され、それぞれが好成績を収めたため、クーパーカー・カンパニーはコンストラクターズチャンピオンを獲得した。
そうしたクーパーカー・カンパニーの活躍ぶりを、他のF1チームも指を加えて見ているハズもなく、他チームのF1マシンもこぞってミッドシップレイアウトを採りはじめた。スクーデリア・フェラーリの総司エンツォ・フェラーリは当初ミッドシップを否定していたが、そのパフォーマンスに認めざるを得なくなり、ついにはミッドシップマシンを開発してレースに投入したのだ。
その結果、クーパーのマシンは徐々に勝てなくなっていったが、それでもミッドシップマシンの先駆者という名声はクーパー以外には当てはまらないのだった（続く）。
